To say the direst things about our situation without constriction in the throat requires deep breaths, the voice coming freely, without ceding to hysteria of any kind. Also to enter the depths of abjected life, illustrated by the cover of this book, without ceding either to melancholy or to moral self-righteousness, i.e. to the ego-states that plague our current situation, requires of poetry an unusual strength. Or let’s say that poetry requires that of us. Then we’re in the terrain of Ulli Freer’s Recovery. It takes us deeply inside the scenarios of current cynicism, as in differing rages of production?/ now matched mock equilibrium producing among other things trees gone planet a concluded barter. Recoveryrisks submersion in destructions, all the more deeply by refusing ideological lifebuoys
finds that the destructions are real, and are supported by ordinary language. Hence the necessary repetition of the action, every section of the book having the same title as the book, since the damage recurs, in various shifting scenarios and discourses that compose reality. In Recovery nature is a register of damage, there’s no outside, but poetry refuses compliance, is never finished, continues to breathe. (William Rowe)
