Tuttle, Richard - Auden, W.H.
Early Auden. San Francisco, Hine Editions / Limestone Press 1991. 11 S. Aquatint and line etching on handmade paper, text letterpress. 30,5 x 21,5cm. Leporello. Halbleder/Pergament. Nr. 9 v. 80 num. u. im Impressum vom Künstler sign. Exemplaren. - - "Early Auden, a ten panel accordion-folded book with eight selections from Auden's early poems chosen and arranged by the artist, combines sugar lift aquatint, hardground etching and letterpress printing. - Tuttles decision to illustrate passages he found particulary beautiful from poems written by Auden between 1929 and 1935, by chance coincides with the current reevaluation of the english poets oeuvre... The hard bright edge in Audens language, where words, like gold nuggets, are primary and embody the sustaining power of his thoughts, appeals to the artist as much as Auden's direct references to visual art. - The eight sugarlift aquatint plates, one for each colour, were based on a monotype Tuttle spontaneously fingerpainted in intense colors on his first visit to the press. Afterseeing the initial proofs, Tuttle added the etched line. For Tuttle, the abstract expressionist nature of the imagery is neither decorative nor supports meaning. It is pure space, a buffer zone for time, the field between the visual and the verbal." (Donna Stein)
